Starter Messages
The best way to have your voice heard is through your own original correspondence but sometimes it’s hard to start with a blank “sheet of paper”. Listed below are starter messages you may use to contact individuals and organizations about Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP). The Problem Statement and Solution Suggestion are common to each of these starter messages, but the Action Request is unique for each audience. You may use the starter messages in their original form or as a starting point to express your own opinions about the need for the development of SBSP.
Personal :: Print Media :: Broadcast Media :: Organizations :: Private Sector :: Government
Each starter message is provided in both formatted and plain text versions. For the formatted version, copy directly from the web page below and paste into your own e-mail program. Check the embedded links to make sure they still work before sending your message. If the embedded links are missing or you are pasting into an online form or a plain text e-mail, copy and paste from the plain text version provided for each starter message below.

Generally, any message should address the intended recipient (Dear Mr. President: etc.), well written on one page or less and include the three main themes listed below. The tone should always be respectful and positive. The UC-Berkeley Library also has some great tips for addressing and contacting elected officials.
- Problem Statement
- Some examples would include dependence on foreign energy sources, impacts of fossil fuels on the environment, energy shortages as threats to the economy and national security and the eventual exhuastion of fossil fuel supplies.
- Solution Suggestion
- For example, “As stated in the recently released National Space Security Office (NSSO) study, Space-Based Solar Power as an Opportunity for Strategic Security, “technological challenges are closing rapidly and the business case for creating Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) is improving with each passing year”. As an unlimited source of clean, environmentally friendly energy, SBSP has the potential to be a game-changing technology.
- Action Request
- Actions to request would include visiting the Citizens for Space Based Solar Power (c-sbsp.org) website and links on the Learn More page, reading recent the NSSO study, passing the information along to friends and colleagues and taking action in their official capacity to promote and support the development of Space-Based Solar Power.

America’s current and future way of life requires an adequate, available and affordable supply of energy. Our dependence on foreign energy sources can be used against us, to weaken our nation’s security and even to manipulate our nation’s economy. The burning of fossil fuels negatively affects our environment and these non-renewable energy sources will eventually be exhausted. As evidenced by current conflicts and the price of foreign oil, energy independence is critical to our nation’s future security and prosperity. Energy independence as a national goal has yet to be strongly stated and a plan to achieve it has yet to be clearly defined.
Based on an October, 2007 U.S. Government feasibility study, Space-Based Solar Power as an Opportunity for Strategic Security, Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) is a game-changing concept that has the potential to become an unlimited source of clean, safe energy. Space-Based Solar Power is the generation of electricity with orbiting solar collectors and the wireless transmission of the energy back to earth. While SBSP is a complex engineering challenge, it does not require any scientific breakthroughs to become a reality. The plan to achieve energy independence will include many technical, economic and political challenges. I believe the large-scale development and deployment of SBSP should be central to the plan.
To make the concept and potential of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) a reality, it must be introduced to a very large number of concerned citizens. Then they can get involved and take positive actions to help get the word out about SBSP.
I invite you to learn more about SBSP and its potential to lead to energy independence. Pass this message along to your family and friends. Most importantly, I urge you to contact the leaders and decision-makers in government, the private sector and the media and ask them to support the development and deployment of SBSP.
The website Citizens for Space Based Solar Power (c-sbsp.org) offers resources to learn more about SBSP, to get started getting the word out and it also provides opportunities to make comments and suggestions. Your actions can and will make a positive difference for us and for future generations in America and worldwide.
